Evaluation On 3D Models

For this evaluation I will be discussing my work on 3D modelling including what went well, my areas for improvement, the feedback I received, my 3D modelling skills and also what I could improve upon with my 3D models and how I would implement this change.

Firstly I feel my strengths during this assignment were first that I had a clear concept on what I was aiming for with my mood boards and concept sketches so when I came to the 3D modelling I was able to visualise and create what I envisioned, another strength I feel I had was my particularity with the textures of my 3D models as I had wanted to find a near close match to the texture I had envisioned and my research and perseverance to find the textures used in the 3D models which I feel lifted the overall quality of the models and helped me capture the original pictures essence.

Next I feel I had several areas for improvement firstly being that of better planned out modelling times as since I had spent a great deal of time working on one model leaving little time left for the other two generally lowering the quality of the second two models to meet deadline times compared to what I had wanted to achieve quality wise with them.

Another area for improvement would have been a better knowledge of the complications of 3D models during my initial mood boards and concept sketches as I had originally planned out to do a high heel 3D model however the great difficulty to achieve this model along with time constraint factors led to me having to cut this idea and go with my back up plan of doing a lipstick 3D model instead to save time and frustration.

For my feedback that I had received it told me that I had generally done a good job with my first 3D models overall as all three of them were generally well received by reviewers: for Ornacia a majority of reviewers thought the model was greatly detailed and had colour, fun and glossy textures which was my aim for the textures aesthetic on this model, with only a repeated improvement that the face cold have looked more rounded and real, all reviewers said the essence I aimed for was captured and Ornacia received an average score of 8.3 out of 10, this feedback tells me that I did a good job of achieving my original plans despite complications and difficulty of the model for this 3D model.

For my Hand Fan model the feedback I received reviewers said that the fan was generally well constructed and detailed and the texture albeit look slightly repetitive received praise for its more realistic look for a hand fan, for critique the hand fan was clocked for the lack of a wooden handle with most reviewers saying an addition of a wooden handle would increase the quality and detail of this particular model, in capturing the essence of my original inspired hand fan all reviewers said this was achieved and overall my hand fan received an average score of 8 out of 10 telling me that despite the lack of a wooden handle part for my hand fan was received very well for its clear constructed base model.

For the Lipstick 3D model it received the highest praise out of all my three 3D models being well revived for it detail and also its realistic, accurate and detailed textures, it however did receive feedback for improvement about just general improvements in detail to the main body tube of the lipstick, the reviewers once again all said that I had captured the essence of my original inspiration and the model received an average score of 8.5 out of 10 giving it the highest overall score out of all of my 3D models this tells me that despite that my lipstick was a backup last minute change because of technical difficulties and time constraints with the high heel this ended up being my best model. For the last part of my feedback also when asked what their favourite 3D model was the Lipstick received the highest amount of votes receiving 66% of votes while Ornacia received 33% and the Hand Fan received 0%.

For my skills with 3D modelling I feel that my strengths within that area lied with my knowledge of the Hypershade editor as I was able to learn and use this feature quite quickly and well which improved my overall quality of the textures that I assigned to the models, area for improvement within my 3D modelling skills include the general knowledge of 3D modelling and the different applications and features that I could have used to make better improvements to my 3D models instead of doing what I was doing with them prior like how I could have bevelled the edges of my Ornacia 3D model to give the Styrofoam head a more softer head and face.

Some improvements I could have made to my 3D models to improve their overall detail and aesthetic would have been to round the face of my Ornacia model which I would have achieved by bevelling the edge of the main cylinder head in that this would have given it a more realistic look, another improvement I could have implemented would have been to bring out the face of my Ornacia model as well as from an angular view the face looks flat and doesn’t have any depth in that part and what I could have done was before I implanted the eyelets into the Ornacia model I could have brought out the face slightly with an extrusion tool to make it look more detailed, accurate and realistic, one more improvement that I could have implemented would be that I could have added in a wooden handle for my hand fan model to detail, depth and realism to the model I think I would have achieved this by creating three cylindrical shapes and extending and thinning these shapes out to match the width and length of the lace part of the fan and after adding in an accurate wooden texture via Hypershade editor I would have bevelled out these cylindrical edges to give it a more softer and finished look overall.

Feedback Received On 3D Models.

I presented my 3D Models to the group and set up a questionnaire for them to answer questions about these models and record their feedback on and this was the feedback I received:

The questions about each of the 3D models detailed what they thought looked detailed and the thoughts on the textures along with their personal opinion on what they liked and what could be improved and a last two questions asking if the 3D models I created capture the essence of the original inspiration along with a rating they would give them out of 10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best, one last question I asked at the end of my feedback includes asking what was their personal favorite 3D model to gauge which model was my most successful.

Complete 3D Models

These are the 3D models I have created for my coursework unit on 3D modelling with the models being from left to right Ornacia, a Hand Fan and Lipstick with the 1st picture being their wireframe models and the 2nd picture being their fully rendered completed model forms.

Ornacia

My first 3D model was Ornacia which was created originally from a cylinder shape where I had highlighted the top face of the shape and then turned the shapes top face around to make it more like my inspired object like a Styrofoam Head with the full fabric draping around its face and over its neck. The next step was to create the nose, eyes and lips of Ornacia first was the eyes which I created by first making the spheres of the eyes more oval shaped and then inverting their shape onto Ornacia to make the eyes be indentations, the next step was to create the nose the way I did this was to first create a cube and using the scale tool I slimmed it down till it bared a similarity to a nose and added it to the Ornacia model, the last step for the main facial features was the mouth which was difficult to create as the inspiration of this model has very small and short shaped lips, first I created another 2 cylinders and made them near flat afterwards I then curled the edges on them with one curling up and another down and after re-sizing them I fitted them to the Ornacia model.
The next steps for the Ornacia model was to add sequins to the face of Ornacia I did this by creating and resizing a sphere to use on the model and after sizing it correctly I duplicated this shape and place them all around the eyes of Ornacia and they made even placements around the face of Ornacia, after all the shapes I had created of Ornacia were done it then moved onto the hyper shade editor where I added in textures for Ornacia with me using a blend of turquoise, black and rainbow shades for the fabric and for the Styrofoam face I gave it a white face texture while adding a green and pink texture to an eye each while also adding a glow special effect to the eyes with the last thing I added was a cyan glitter texture for the sequins.

Hand Fan

For my second 3D model I first created a cube shape and made it almost flat, the next step to create the hand fan was to increase the number of segments on one of the faces on the hand fan, after that I then brought out all the segment lines up to so it appeared in a zig-zag like shape.
Afterwards I brought the two ends together to compress it to make it more similar to a fan shape and then highlighted one side of the fan to shorten it down and give it a more flayed out look like a fan has, the last step was to add the texture to the hand fan which was a lace looking texture that had a white and blue texture.

Lipstick

My final 3D model was originally going to be a high heel however due to the complications and the difficulty of the design I had to change my other model to a lipstick since I had to complete these models within time constraints, what I first did for this 3D model was that I created a cube first and resized it correctly in proportion to the other 3D models, afterwards I then created a cylinder that was to be the tube of the lipstick colour and also resized this shape and place it with and to proportion of the lipstick container.

The next step I did on the lipstick container and the lipstick tube was bevel the edges first on the container to make it smoother and refined and more like an actual lipstick container and then for the lipstick tube I highlighted the top face and beveled the edges on that face so that it has the edges most like a lipstick over sharp corners I then while still keeping the top face highlighted I tuned the angle of the face to make it more of the lipstick tube shape. The last part I did was then for the textures of the lipstick where I used a shiny and smooth gold texture for the container and then used a magenta/purple like lipstick colour for the actual lipstick tube colour to finish it off.
